Former GBMHA Grad - Brad Cuzner |
![]() Former Glace Bay Minor Hockey graduate Brad Cuzner is having a banner year this hockey season and it appears far from over, based on what lies ahead later this month. On Sunday (April 3/09) his team who previously won the Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey League Title, the Notre Dame Hounds pounded the Winnipeg Wild 8-2 in the final of the West Regional Tournament in Swift Current, Sask.. Glace Bay native, Brad Cuzner notched a hat-trick to lead his team to victory. The Notre Dame Hounds will now represent the West region at the Telus Cup National Midget AAA Hockey Championship later this month in Selkirk, Sask - April 20-26. This is Brad's first year suiting up with the Notre Dame squad as last year he attended Rothsay New Brunswick High School lacing up with their popular hockey program, which he truly enjoyed. Local Glace Bay fans fondly remember the year prior, when Brad led our Miners to a successful season in the Cape Breton Bantam AAA Hockey League. For his efforts that year he was awarded the League's Most Valuable Player in 2006-07 for his hockey excellence. So far this year, Cuzner has been making the best of his new western experience both from an education and hockey standpoint. The slick skating, tenacious forward says " it has been a great season with the Hounds. We have had great success and it is a neat opportunity to play with this organization and group of players. The experiences that I have encountered this year are something you will never forget. The hockey here is amazing and the group of guys on the team is pretty special. Being in such a prestigious college it means a lot to be a part of the Hounds. Other than the hockey which has been the biggest factor in my time here, the academics are crucial to growth. They really harp on your academics and staying on top of things can get tough at times but the teachers help and work with you to better your marks. The staff has a strong belief on getting you to the next level so they push you to do your best.” We are sure that Brad will do well as all Glace Bay Miners and local Cape Bretoners will be following his team's progress as they compete for the National Midget AAA Championship at the 2009 Telus Cup. Fans can track the Notre Dame Hounds progress by clicking on the site: http://www.hockeycanada.ca/index.php/ci_id/56082/la_id/1.htm UPDATE...APRIL 26/09 Just a couple of weeks ago we reported on former Glace Bay Minor Hockey grad Brad Cuzner's season with an up-date. At that time Brad's Midget AAA team the Notre Dame Hounds had just captured their provincial title for Saskatchewan and had earned the right to represent the West in the 2009 Telus Cup. On Sunday April 26th we are glad to report that Brad and his Hounds defeated the Calgary Buffaloes by a 4-0 shutout victory to capture the prestigious event. Congratulations to Brad on winning Gold and to his team for claiming the national honour of being Canada's Best Midget AAA hockey team in 2008-09. |

![]() |
Pictured above are two former Glace Bay Minor Hockey players, Mitchell McMullin (left) and Mitchell O’Neill (right) who currently are enrolled at Appleby College located in Oakville, Ontario. Both youngsters made a major life experience transition this past year, leaving home in pursuit of a new educational path and to enroll in a solid hockey development program. We were able to catch up to both youngsters during their recent visit home for March Break and able to get an up-date, as McMullin is a grade 10 student this year, while O'Neill is attending grade 11. The pai The pair is enjoying their first year at Appleby College while responsibly balancing a high level of academic excellence and with an internationally recognized hockey development program. Typically, their hockey team is on the ice five to six times weekly, with strict adherence to a healthy practice/game ratio. Often their league schedules tournament play locally and in the United States, and Varsity teams, competing in U.S. college playing tours, allowing further exposure to NCAA eyes. For many hockey youth excelling in the game today, many factors come into play before making decisions to pursue prep school, collegiate hockey, major junior, etc… One thing for certain, whatever decision is made, the boys rely on strong family support (as evident in both of these cases), so that they can continue to remain committed and focused on their goals. This season, the two former Miners participated in a prep school league which consists of 5 teams from the Toronto area and one team from Buffalo, NY. Despite a great season, they were recently eliminated in the semi-finals by Andrews College. In addition to their regular season success both McMullin and O’Neill reaped top honors (as seen above with their championship medals) their Appleby College hockey team recently captured the prestigious 46 team Bur Bear High School Hockey Tournament played in Burlington Ontario. Congratulations to both of these fine young men on your success to date and as you continue to strive to balance both your academic and hockey excellence. Local fans can check out your College or track your progress next hockey season by visiting the Appleby College website @ www.appleby.on.ca Mitchell McMullin is the son of Karen and John McMullin, from Reserve Mines, while Mitchell O’Neil is the son of Annette and Greg O’Neill, of Glace Bay. |

Former Grad Logan Shaw Scores Two Goals |
![]() Former GBMHA grad, 16 year old rookie Logan Shaw has patiently bided his time so far this season gaining experience and developing his game as he adjusts to the must faster level of major junior hockey. After getting drubbed 10-2 in their last home game by the QMJHL's leading Drumondville sqad the Eagle's were faced with the additional challenge of facing their former GM/Head-Coach for Montreal, Pascal Vincent @ Centre 200. Both markers were nice however his second marker was a great confidence builder as the rookie drilled a high glove side shot past a an out-stretched St Louis Blue draft pick Jake Allen. Notes: With the Eagles well in control of the game by the 3rd period it was nice to see that Eagle's coach Doucher awarded his younger players with some well-deserved ice time. After 1st year rookie Maximilien Le Sieur notched his first Q-League goal in the final stanza, fellow rookie, Shaw showed plenty of character by darting back to the Montreal net to scoop up the souvenier puck for LeSieur. Finally, immediately following the game a large number of local fans remained in the stands to hear the Game's 3 Stars announcement. Among those in sttendance were Logan's grandparents, Myrna Shaw and Jim MacDougall who stood surrounded by family and friends alike. On-Ice Hockey Officials Trained To Avoid Injury |
![]() |
Each year all on-ice hockey officials across our province sustain injuries as a result of accidental collisions and errand shots or passes from hockey players. During annual refresher certification courses Hockey Nova Scotia has taken steps to ensure that all on-ice officials wear the proper protective gear to guard against errand pucks and to anticipate altercations during full contact game situations. Many officials also attribute their safety to years of experience of officiating or playing the sport. Pictured above local referee Liam Gillis feels a little overshadowed in the background by a couple of aggressive Bantam AAA players as they each try to gain territorial advantage deep in the Glace Bay end zone. In this case Gillis's experience helps him make an elusive escape along the boards as Glace Bay Miner # 9 player Jeff (Bambi) Donovan and Sydney Steeler player # 2 Blaine Mills collide hard on the play. The Glace Bay Miners play most of their home games at the BAYplex on Monday evenings @ 7:30pm. Next Generation Of Miners Hit The Ice ! (Oct 23, 2008) |

While most minor hockey program across our province try to manage dwindling registration numbers our own Glace Bay Association in recent years continues to experience surprising growth in registration. This season at the entry level there are 70 children ages 5-7 registered in our popular Glace Bay Minor Hockey Tots Program. Overall our registration base has surged to over 540 players ranging from tots to midget. With increased numbers our association needs to rely on recruiting more volunteers and parent support in order to make our various hockey programs work from both a developmental and fun aspect. Pictured above is a sample of some of our future stars with a few sporting their favorite NHL jerseys: (L-R) Colton Boutilier age 6; Logan Royal -5; Connor O’Brien – 5; Maria McPhee -6; Riley White – 5 and Tyler Facchin -5. |
TWO GBMHA GRADS FACE-OFF THIS WEEKEND |
![]() ![]() |
The Sydney-Glace Bay highway should have an increase in traffic this up-coming Friday and Saturday evenings as two former Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association graduates and friends get re-acquainted. Pictured above is Marc Bourgeois (left) a 2nd year forward with the Lewiston Maineiacs and Logan Shaw (right) a 1st year rookie with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Both Bourgeois and Shaw played on the same teams at the begining of their minor hockey tenures. Bourgeois and Rouyan-Noranda Husky 2nd year forward Jarrad Struthers blazed the offense trail starting in Atom AAA while Shaw being younger earned a second line position that year. The younger Shaw kept his eyes peeled on both Bourgeois and Struthers as duo set scoring records all the way up through the ranks. With all three players making an impact at the Major Midget lhockey level they each eventually departed their separate ways landing spots with their current respective QMJHL teams. Glace Bay residents are proud of these three athletes for being the first crop of GBMHA players to play in the QMJHL in many years. Fans who have followed all three know that their success is directly attributed to their dedicated training rituals and a personal commitment to the game. For the rookie Shaw, (who only turns 16 on October 5th) it will seem a bit strange to be facing off against Marc in a highly competitive situation when he can easily recall the many times that Marc would call him @ home inviting him to join him on a hockey rental @ the BAYplex. Good Luck to both players. Glace Bay will be out to show our support Friday & Saturday with game times set each night for 7:00pm. |
